“A heart for the world”

Originally titled “Being stagnant in a world that continues to move around you” is a piece made in 2019 in collaboration with Marlon, a member of the Industries of the Blind in Greensboro, Nc. I was a part of the first year of students to collaborate with the Industries of the Blind to share the stories of the members there who are visually impaired with the neighboring community. The goal was to share stories of independence, empowerment, and access.

As an artist this was my first time collaborating with someone as well as telling a story visually that wasn’t my own. It allowed me to see the similarities between us despite the age gap and his visual impairment of Stargardt disease.

While collaborating with Marlon to share his story of visual impairment, we also collaborated with other students (in sculpture and creative writing) to be able to translate our work into different forms, so that those who are visually impaired could actually perceive the work.
